Greenville, good ideas, inspiration, local,

brooklyn inspired.

Right now I’m in New York for Brooklyn Beta, a web conference that has far surpassed my expectations. I feel incredibly privileged to be here and want to say a big thank you to OOBE for sending me out for it. From the minute we walked in the door, you could tell that everything was going to be top notch.

A photo of the conference space before things kicked off.

To say this has been inspiring would be an understatement. The underlying theme of the conference has been Make Something You Love. But today’s discussions deepened that concept by adding Make Something that Matters. It’s great to be reminded how design and development can actually make a difference in people’s lives, especially when I work for a very customer-oriented company whose goal is just that. Lots to think about.

The concept and the people behind this conference are amazing, the details are perfect (hand-painted signs, incredible local food, etc) and the sheer number of people I’m meeting is pretty overwhelming. It’s good for me to get out of my comfort zone though, and I’m looking forward to what tomorrow holds!

ready for cool.

The sweltering temperatures lately have me longing for Fall. The food, the colors, the clothes. Even looking at these things makes me feel a little cooler.

organized things.

I’ve really been enjoying this Things Organized Neatly blog. So much fun and inspiration in one place! I love that bringing order to simple things can create so much beauty.

Rediscovered.

Thanks to this post from Erin, I finally started using Pinterest to catalog my inspiration photos. I’ve had so much fun revisiting old images I had saved — thinking about projects long forgotten, and looking at rooms I wish I lived in. If you’re interested in seeing what inspires me, feel free to follow along here.

Here are a few things I was thrilled to rediscover.

Greenville’s History

Earlier this week, BibliOdyssey posted about the Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps, specifically their typography. Follow this link to read his post and learn more about the history of these intriguing maps!

Since I discovered them a few years ago they have been a source of pure fascination for me. It’s so interesting to see how our city has changed and evolved. I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked up historical buildings to see if I could find out when they were built, and what they were used for in the past. It’s such an amazing glimpse into our city’s history. I wanted to post a few more detailed screenshots of Greenville’s collection for you.

The earliest map on record for Greenville is from 1884

By 1902 the city had grown substantially.

Look for Huguenot Mill (where Indie Craft Parade was held) in the middle of this 1888 map.

The current Barley’s location apparently used to be a hardware store!

The building at the corner of Mulberry & West Washington is now home to Cowork.

Hopefully these will spark your interest, and you’ll go explore the Sanborn Maps for yourself at the University of South Carolina’s Digital Collection.

My first purchase on Etsy was a letterpressed Valentine for Andrew, three years ago!
In honor of that purchase, I created a treasury of more goodness to inspire you on this Valentine’s day.

editing.

I discovered the mo+mo living site last week. The philosophy of “paring to what is essential + valued + beautiful” resonates with me so much! I feel like I’ve been on a quest for the last year to simplify and purge my life of ‘stuff’. It’s way too easy for things (that are supposed to make life better) to take over. And it also seems difficult to reclaim simplicity, whether in the realm of food, work or simply living.

This idea of editing and getting back to the basics is extremely appealing, especially when it’s broken down into bite-sized tips for actually making it happen.

A few super-inspiring (and relevant to me) pointers from the blog:

· focus on investing in well-made goods and on having fewer things

· avoid rushing into purchases and instead carefully curate over time

· clutter can come in the form of unfinished tasks

    · make a list of unfinished tasks

    · each day schedule time to do one thing on your list

    · complete unfinished projects

    · let go of projects that no longer interest you

My Fridays

…are always full of hopes for the weekend. Things to do, places to go, errands to run. This weekend is Fall for Greenville, and I think we may even get to take our bike ride this weekend too!

Quite possibly the most anticipated event though, is adding a new piece of furniture to our house. We’ve been looking for an excuse to buy one of Barb’s amazing pieces for a good while now, and this beautiful dresser will be coming home with us at some point this weekend.

I love the way she breathes new life into old, often broken and discarded pieces of furniture.

Barb gives each of her transformed pieces a name, and knowing that this piece was for Andrew and me, she did some research on our newest favorite place: Prague. She chose the name Vltava, after the river that runs through the middle of the city. What a perfect surprise!

If you haven’t seen Barb’s work before, make sure you check out the before and after photos of this piece in her blog post. Or, if you’re not in Greenville, and her work inspires you to update your own furniture, you can read the how-to articles she writes for Design*Sponge.

Either way, prepare to be inspired!
